Ten years of YPJ

“A rose grows thorns to protect itself. You cannot imagine a rose without thorns. That is why self-defense is a must. All living creatures need protection, just as much as they need nutrition and reproduction.”

About YPJ

Learn about the history and achievements of the Women’s Protection Units - understand our aims, and our struggle for freedom and democracy.

The Womens Protection Units YPJ is an all-female military self-defense force that was founded in 2013 with the aim to protect the people and women of Rojava and their right of self-administration.

The YPJ soon became an ethnic diverse force, as women from Arab, Assyrian, Armenian and other origins joined our ranks.

“It’s not just about using weapons, it’s about standing up for one’s rights, one identity, for everything that belongs to a human being. We try to create this awareness: an attack on one woman is an attack on all women. With this in mind, women need to organize themselves. When unity and togetherness is created, we all become stronger.”
